Depression and Anxiety Can Overlap

Posted in Uncategorized on March 11th, 2010 by — Be the first to comment!

Depression and anxiety are distinct, and particularly common, emotional disorders. In fact, depression and anxiety are the two most common emotional disorder forms. While depression is unique from anxiety, it is not uncommon for depression and anxiety to overlap in persons having emotional disorders.

When depression and anxiety appear together, either condition can be the cause or the result of the other. Someone who is depressed, as an example, can become anxious and this may be especially true as a depressed conditions lingers. An anxious person can become withdrawn or begin to feel overwhelmed by their condition, an outlook that may bring about a depressed state. If there is a more likely scenario for a lead in between the two conditions, it may be anxiety leading to depression.

The depressed state presents, usually, a reduction in one’s physical expression. Depressed people are often, though not always, emotionally down and physically listless. The depressed state is not classically a state of displaced energy, a description that matches anxiety quite well. The depressed person who goes from a listless downcast mood to expressing anxiety-like agitation may actually be presenting the symptoms of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is marked by lethargic depression swinging to agitation, but the agitation in bipolar disorder is mania, not anxiety. The manic state typically presents extroverted, extreme, and often exceptionally strange behavior. People with anxiety aren’t typically extroverted, and don’t typically display especially unusual behavior.

A chronically anxious person’s sense of uptight and upset can present a considerable physical drain. An extended period of chronic anxiety can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, and under such circumstances depression may set in. People who have anxiety also tend to become withdrawn, or to self-medicate using alcohol or drugs, and both of these coping methods can and do lead to significant depression.

As with all human conditions, emotional disorders are not uniform but do have similarities. An anxious person need not develop depression, while someone with depression may go on to develop an anxious state that is not in fact symptomatic of bipolar disorder. If there is an important reflection to keep in mind it’s that a case of depression or anxiety does not automatically discount the possibility of some other emotional dysfunction also being present. Distinct psychological problems can appear simultaneously.

Panic Attack Facts

Posted in Uncategorized on March 11th, 2010 by — Be the first to comment!

Panic attack can strike anytime, anywhere and to anyone. It doesn’t even need a reason to hit you. Although excessive stress can trigger a panic attack, it is completely random most of the time.

However, once you experience the first panic attack, the body will be put on “alert” status and the chances of having another attack is increased. This becomes a problem if panic attacks occur again and again.

An important contributor to the occurrence of further panic attacks is related to where the first one occurred. For most, it happens in a place where they cannot escape easily: for example, in a train, bus, taxi, elevator, building. For example, if the panic attack occurred during a bus ride, chance are, you would be quite nervous during your next bus ride as you think panic attack might hit you again. The more nervous you are, the more likely another panic attack will happen.

With your initial experience with panic attack, you will most probably try to escape before you feel the attack coming on. Once out of the bus, the panic feeling subside and your worst fear is confirmed. You associate bus ride to your panic attack. A few more experiences confirms this and you avoid taking a bus altogether.

What I have just explained is a typical example of the development of panic attack and it can be applied to any situation. You have a panic attack at a particular place or situation. You link it to that place or situation and avoid it.

The main culprit here is fear. The fear and anxiety of having a panic attack causes it to happen. Panic attack feeds on fear and anxiety. The more your fearful of it happening, the harder and faster it will hit you. In order to control a panic attack and stop it forever, you need to attack its roots – fear.

The most effective way to stop panic attack forever is to KNOW that you will not be harmed. A large part of the fear comes from the fact that the sufferer thinks he is about to die, which is totally untrue!

Here’s a few FACTS about panic attack:

-Panic attack CANNOT cause heart attack

-Panic attack CANNOT cause suffocation

-Panic attack CANNOT make you faint

-Panic attack CANNOT cause you to go mad/crazy

Doesn’t feel like it? But its true! There more than enough medical evidence to prove all these. The symptoms feel unnatural because its a panic response from the body, your not suppose to feel it unless your in danger – which your not! Panic attack is the result of this “panic alarm” going off for the wrong reason. Use this knowledge to your advantage, KNOW that you are safe and panic attack cannot harm you. Don’t fear panic attack…and certainly don’t fear having one!

A Look at Anxiety Depression

Posted in Uncategorized on March 11th, 2010 by — Be the first to comment!

A lot of people who are exerting too much of their brain power usually exhaust not only their physical strength when engaging in various multi-tasking activities, they also tend to over extend their brains up to the point when it plainly needs some good old time for relaxation. A lot of busy people who seem to cannot fathom the idea of relaxing and taking time of from work, as well as their worries, tend to actually start having nervous breakdowns, anxiety depression and all sorts of mental illnesses that can cause a person’s sanity to go haywire, fortunately, if you’re one of those poor unfortunate ones who are unable to distress and is constantly worried and fussing over things, there are actually available cures and various treatments for treating anxiety depression.

Anxiety depression is actually characterized by all sorts of irregularities and erratic behavior from the person who is suffering from it, this is usuallu due to certain stress triggers that may tend to easily cause a person undue jitters and stress. Also, a lot of people who tend to get easily nervous over stressful activities are actually prone to having anxiety depression, its just a matter of being strong-willed when it comes to facing difficult and stress-prone activities. It may be pretty hard to overcome at first, but trying to be calm and cool in times of extreme pressure is what’ll actually save your mental health from going totally downward spiral.

When it comes to effectively curing one’s self from a mental illness, one must keep in mind that you have to be actually honest with yourself and assess what kind of depression or mental illness you actually have, go to reputable psychiatrist to get yourself diagnosed correctly as well as be able to get the right depression treatment for yourself. Here are the various types of depression:

Manic or Bipolar depression – characterized by sudden and extreme changes in one’s mood wherein one minute he or she is in an elevated state of euphoria while the next minute (day or week) he or she is feeling to be in a personal hell.

Postpartum depression – characterized by a prolonged sadness and a feeling of emptiness by a new mother wherein physical stress during child birth, an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the new born baby can be just some of the possible factors why some new mother go through this.

Dysthimia – characterized by a slight similarity with depression, although this time, it’s been proven to be a lot less severe, but of course with any case, should be treated immediately.

Cyclothemia – characterized by a slight similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the individual suffering from this mental illness may occasionally suffer from severe changes in one’s moods.

Seasonal Affective Disorder – characterized by falling in a rut only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall) studies however, prove that more people actually fall in to a rut more during the Winter and Fall seasons and lastly, Mood swings, wherein a person’s mood may shift from happy to sad to angry in just a short time.

But the type of depression that has actually been proven to be quite common among people is anxiety depression, which is actually characterized by the state of being overly anxious about things. Anxiety, a supposedly normal behavior that’ll actually help a person adjust more to a certain stressful activity like first date jitters or a grueling exam the following day. Anxiety actually helps you get psyched up towards facing certain “difficult situations”; anxiety therefore is actually a good thing. Anxiety depression however, is simply the opposite, not to be easily dismissed as a “case of the nerves”; Anxiety depression is in actuality an illness that can be caused from the biological makeup of an individual, or in other words, a hereditary illness.

Also, there are actually various types of Anxiety depression, each having its own unique characteristics. Take for example Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD, this kind of Anxiety depression is a lot more complicated than the average Anxiety depression, in spite of possibly being a day-to-day habit for those who suffer this kind of Anxiety depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder actually makes the individual quite more paranoid than usual, anxiety attacks are more frequent, even absurd at times. They can even be anxious even when there’s no apparent reason that calls for them to behave in such a way. People suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder actually shows a lot of symptoms, from lack of sleep, to being unable to relax, getting tired easily, cannot concentrate on what they’re doing and even suffering from depression. This kind of Anxiety depression is still curable; just a little work will actually do the trick.

Consult a reputable cognitive behavior therapist who’ll help give the individual the therapy that he or she needs to help him or her loosen up, also prescribed medicines are sort of a must to help these individuals battle anxiety attacks, help them calm down and relax.

Anxiety in Learning a Language

Posted in Uncategorized on March 11th, 2010 by — Be the first to comment!

Some people come across with many difficulties when learning a second language. It is believed that there are some emotional factors in foreign language learning which affect our learning abilities. These are mainly thought to be intelligence, motivation, attitudes and anxiety. Among these, anxiety stands out as one of the main influential factors for effective language learning. This foreign language anxiety is defined by some authors as “a feeling of tension, apprehension and nervousness associated with the situation of learning a foreign language.”

Initially, I would like to point out that a lot of researches were held in order to understand the reason of that anxiety.According to these studies, there are some internal and external factors which increase or decrease the level of anxiety one feels when learning a second language. There are also some personality traits which increase anxiety in language learning. In my paper, I tried to examine some journal articles of different writers to reach up some outcomes about that kind of anxiety. While studying on them, I found various causes of anxiety and I started to wonder about ways in order to overcome this feeling.

In this paper, I studied on different works of authors in order to understand the relationship between anxiety and achievement. Elaine K.Horwits in her work “Language Anxiety and Achievement” explains this relationship and tells about an instrument to measure this anxiety. She goes on her work by clarifying that type of anxiety and offers some solutions to both instructors and learners. Furthermore, in the text “Anxiety in the College Japanese Language Classroom” by Kazu Kitano we as readers are confronted with a specific research made among college students in United States learning Japanese. We are given some research questions and in the end we are able to evaluate the results. As a result, we draw a conclusion that anxiety in learning a foreign language may differ according to some factors such as age, gender, student’s current level etc. The last text I studied was named “Language Anxiety: Differentiating Writing and Speaking Components” by Yuh-show Cheng, Elaine K.Horwitz and Diana L.Schallert. Here, writing and speaking anxieties are taken separetely and a research was made concerning these. The writers focused on the results and explained the reasons why they found that kind of a research incomplete.

All in all, I would like to say that in my work I tried to find the causes of anxiety in language learning. I examined the researches made by some writers and I have thought about some possibilities in order to overcome this feeling in language learning. I will explain some researchers’ thougths about this topic. Moreover, I will end up my paper by suggesting my own ideas.

To begin with, I would like to mention about Elaine K.Horwitz’s text, “Language Anxiety and Achievement” She and her colleagues name language anxiety specific and call it Foreign Language Anxiety.Owing to that fact, they offer an instrument to measure it which is the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). This article mainly discusses the relationship between anxiety and achievement.Firstly, she sees anxiety as a psychological construct. As it is associated with the nervous system, it negatively influences our motions, especially it has a deep impact in learning. The writer talks about the early perspectives on anxiety and language learning. She explains Scovel’s theory who believes in separating the different kinds of anxiety by making specific researches in order to identify the type of anxiety they are measuring.Since then, studies have started to be made by using the FLCAS and other particular measures.Studies show that there is a negative correlation between anxiety and achievement when final grades are concerned. In the first place they evaluated the final grades; but then gave up that idea and started to use more current achievement measures.Consequently, they reached up a point that the relationship alters according to some factors such as ‘instructional levels’ and ‘ different target languages’.Some researchers namely Sparks and Ganschow propose the Linguistic Coding Differences Hypothesis (LCDD) to question whether the foreign language anxiety is independent of language achievement. They want to know if anxiety is a cause or result of poor achievement in language learning. They wonder if shortcomings in first language learning causes this failure. They believe that people who have poor language learning abilities will have foreign language anxiety.Contrary to that belief, MacIntyre and Horwitz argues that there is no tie between these.Afterwards,Elaine enumerates the conditions in which anxiety level changes. The teacher is seen as one of the most important factors.He/she is given many alternatives to make a harmonious environment. To conclude, she recommends to distinguish the role of anxiety in language learning from its role in language performance. She talks about an unresolved issue in which it is difficult to determine if anxiety has really interfered with learning. She still wonders if anxious learners are capable of having difficulties in acquiring a second language. To what extent anxiety negatively affects learning a language is still a question to be answered.

Secondly, the text “Anxiety in the College Japanese Language Classroom” by Kazu Kitano gives us some ideas about the relationship between anxiety and language learning. In his work, he talks about a research made among college learners of Japanese. This study wanted to find out the sources of that anxiety in the classroom. Mainly, this study found out that there are two sources of that anxiety in foreign language learning. These are mainly individual student’s fear of negative evaluation and his or her self-perceieved speaking ability. Many students are afraid of being evaluated negatively. They are afraid of making mistakes while pronouncing a word.As they are sensitive to such assessments they choose not to speak in front of their peers. Furthermore, they compare their speaking ability with other students, teachers and native speakers. To sum up,the author states that there is an interaction between fear of negative evaluation and self-perceieved ability which affects anxiety level.

There are many factors which influence anxiety level. For instance, instructional level of the student, the instructor, gender, age, native language, usage of foreign language, the length of time he/she studies the second language, final grades, previous experience, instructor-learner interaction, classroom procedures and so on.

Taking everything into account, this research emphasizes the importance of teacher’s role in language learning. It offers them many ways which can be applied in their classes. For example, first they can identify their students so that some individual differences will not be noticeable so much. They should make positive reinforcement by making positive comments and show specific consideration to those having fear of negative evaluation. They should bear in mind that there is not such a rule saying that an advanced or experienced student will not be anxious. For the above mentioned reasons, anyone can feel anxious due to internal and external factors.

Posted in Uncategorized on March 11th, 2010 by — Be the first to comment!

If you’re currently feeling so out of it, totally out of your normal system and just basically hating and ignoring almost, always everything and anyone that comes along, try to get yourself checked by a psychiatrist because you those little mood swings and erratic Ally McBeal-ish behavior that you’re trying to ignore for some long may actually be symptoms of depression. Act fast because if you do, it’ll certainly be a lot harder for you to be able to have yourself cured from this illness, especially once self-delusion starts to kick in.

Actually start by hauling your depressed ass into the hospital and get yourself diagnosed by a reputable psychiatrist, one that’ll actually help you with your depression concerns, answer all the possible questions that you may have when it comes to depression as well as provide you with the best available to depression treatment that’ll make you give yourself some good-old, yet extremly effective depression help. All it needs is the right attitude.

After actually being honest with yourself when it comes to actually being a patient who is suffering from depression, quit turning youself into a victim and find out from these various types of depression the actual one that you’re suffering from: Manic or Bipolar depression – characterized by sudden and extreme changes in one’s mood wherein one minute he or she is in an elevated state of euphoria while the next minute (day or week) he or she is feeling to be in a personal hell, Postpartum depression – characterized by a prolonged sadness and a feeling of emptiness by a new mother wherein physical stress during child birth, an uncertain sense of responsibility towards the new born baby can be just some of the possible factors why some new mother go through this, Dysthimia – characterized by a slight similarity with depression, although this time, it’s been proven to be a lot less severe, but of course with any case, should be treated immediately, Cyclothemia – characterized by a slight similarity with Manic or Bipolar depression wherein the individual suffering from this mental illness may occasionally suffer from severe changes in one’s moods, Seasonal Affective Disorder – characterized by falling in a rut only during specific seasons (i.e. Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall) studies however, prove that more people actually fall in to a rut more during the Winter and Fall seasons and lastly, Mood swings, wherein a person’s mood may shift from happy to sad to angry in just a short time. But in spite of how scary or how daunting a task is the road towards a sound mental health is, depression help abounds and is just up to you if you’re willing to take in some of that depression help, may it be from your family, friends, support group and mainly starting from yourself, there really is a lot of depression help to go around.

The old adage, slowly but surely greatly applies in trying to treat depression, as the patient continues taking the prescribed medicines for his/her depression treatment, as well as the corresponding therapy sessions with the cognitive behavior therapist, a patient being treated from depression needs all the support and depression help that he or she can get.

While being treated for depression, the patient as well as his or her family and other loved ones are advised to make realistic goals concerning depression wherein, to not assume that their depression can be easily treated in a snap. Depression help begins with trying to understand the patient’s situation and continue on being patient as well as always extending your help because depression help is never easy nor is the depression treatment itself, which is why both patients and loved ones need to help each other out through every step of the way. Never set goals that are high above your reach, give yourself some depression help by not being too hard on yourself, believe that you are good and strong enough to achieve your goals but only one step at a time.

Coping With Depression And Anxiety

Posted in Uncategorized on March 11th, 2010 by — Be the first to comment!

Most people experience normal fluctuations in mood. This is a relatively normal experience. However, there are many who suffer with fluctuations in mood on a consistent basis. Many even experience relatively low moods for extended periods of time. This is often referred to as “depression”. There are also individuals that suffer from the effects of unrealistic anxiety on a consistent basis. It has been found that most people who experience depression often also experience anxiety often. Many may feel burdened by these moods, but are unable to find a constructive way of coping. Here, we will express some methods in coping with depression and anxiety.

When a person experiences a loss, faces high levels of stress, or experiences a medical condition, it may be normal to encounter depression. There are many signs and symptoms associated with depression. The following represents just some of these:

- An individual may find that they are experiencing complications in various areas of their life. This may include troubled relationships at school, work, and in the personal life.

- Many who experience depression may find that the feelings that they experience are causing difficulties in their life. For example, they may not have the energy or the desire to do the things that they need to do, experience the things that they once enjoyed, or pursue new hobbies.

- Depression may result in an individual becoming sick on a consistent basis. This is because depression may actually cause the immunity to weaken.

There are medications that are designed for depression, and those that are designed for both. Many professionals agree that if you are coping with depression and anxiety, it may be best to pursue therapy sessions and group support meetings as well. Dog Separation Anxiety – 3 Common Problems in Anxious Dogs

Posted in Uncategorized on March 11th, 2010 by — Be the first to comment!

Separation anxiety in dogs is extremely common reason for dogs to be anxious.   The symptoms of anxiety can be so severe that dogs are sent to shelters.   While every dog is different, and displays their anxiety in a different way, the following are 3 symptoms of dog separation anxiety

Over Excitement:

When you get home, watch your dogs behavior.  Look for actions like jumping up on you, licking you, and greeting you excessively.   Excessive and prolonged greetings are a common symptom of separation anxiety in dogs.    The greeting is not normal and calm, it is frantic and uncontrolled. Your dog thought you would never return, so they are not just saying ‘Hi’, they are thrilled to be reunited with you.

Digging, Scratching, Chewing:

The next level of separation anxiety is when a dog moves beyond barking and starts get physical. This type of scratching chewing and digging is an attempt to escape from the confines of the room, house, or yard so that they can find you.   I call this “barrier anxiety”.  Some dogs will be so anxious and compulsive that they will injure themselves by breaking through glass, tearing down walls, and otherwise injure you or your property to get to you.

Barking and Whining:

Your dog barking when you leave, and while you are gone, is one of the most common symptoms of a dogs with a moderate level of separation anxiety. Typically, your dog will already be showing signs of anxiety before you leave.  As the anxiety level increases, this may change to whining, then barking. Your dogs barks sometimes become high-pitched yelps.   They are truly in a panic because they think that you are not coming back and need to be with you. This is a huge problem if live in a condominium or apartment

Not all dogs display these behaviors, some display mild symptoms such as whining, others will destroy a room that they are left in until you return. Separation anxiety is a serious condition and robs both you and your dog of a healthy relationship.

When dog separation anxiety is left untreated, it can develop into a serious, destructive and expensive problem. To see a complete list of dog separation anxiety symptoms, visit http://www.dogseparationanxietyhelp.com
